Thank you, P.D. Alleva, for giving me a copy of the book in exchange for a fair review!
Golem follows John Ashton as he takes on his first detective assignment. But what was supposed to be a simple case turns sour. He gets sucked into Alena’s tale about a demonic force—Golem—who had control over her. John doesn’t believe her at first, yet when her story’s details happen to him, her tale might be too real.
The plot very much gets in the characters’ heads as each does so much to then forget everything, back to square one. It definitely brings chills with how many backward steps they take. I liked Golem’s details and the cunning smile he puts on to manipulate everyone around him.
My main critique is just how difficult the story is to follow. It’s mostly half told by John, half told by Alena. Yet I mixed Alena up with Annette, who also has major points in the plot. I just found it hard to keep track of who was who.
Overall, I did like the story, and I do think it’s a good horror novel.
