Time for a NaNoWriMo update!
This year, I’m rewriting one of my high school novels, my second novel called Free. I haven’t touched the Word file in almost ten years, and I barely remember the story. I didn’t go back through and read it before NaNoWriMo. Instead, I’m writing it from scratch, creating new scenes and pushing boundaries.
I’m also doing a new thing: writing out of order. This is common for some writers, but I’ve never written a novel out of order before. It’ll be interesting to see how it goes. I doubt it’ll be perfect, but it’s something. I’ve already connected a couple of the scenes, which feels like putting two puzzle pieces together.
So far, I’ve worked a lot more on building a more memorable world since I didn’t remember much in the first place. I’ve also already added a new character who works a modern magical creature restaurant in a human town.
Hopefully, it’ll all go well as I continue working in a random order.

― Toni Morrison

I’m also trying this approach of writing scenes out of order. I find it very liberating. I know there will be a lot of rewriting when I put it all together but often the hardest part of writing is getting words on a page.

I have a little notepad to help keep track of parts I need to tie together. Hopefully, that’ll help, so I’m not fumbling as much when rewriting.
But I do find it helpful to get words on the page. Cause if I get stuck, I just skip to another scene.
