How to spark the story

Somedays, it’s hard to know what to write about. The inspirational genius inside shuts off and we don’t know what to do. But we have to write.

Some thoughts could spark a story though, jumpstart our creativity.

1) Childhood memories

Some childhood memories are more interesting than most. Perhaps you met a strange animal as a child or had a strange encounter. Or maybe you gotta write about how terrible something was. There’s a lot of childhood moments that are good to write about.

2) Person you see often but don’t know

Some people you see but never meet can be the most interesting people. You never know them, so you can run wild with the thought, thinking of it in different perspectives.

3) Controversial topics

Some of the best topics to write about are what people don’t want to write about. Like perhaps something the government did made you upset. The whole world may not know what to do. But the more someone talks about it, the more we can find a solution.

4) Object that interests you

Some objects can be strange and unusual. It could be from a book to a rug to a pair of sunglasses. But they all have stories to tell.

5) Story from a song

Some songs are vague enough for everyone to relate. But sometimes we can twist them into our own stories.

  1. I often get caught in the trap of not knowing what to try but trying to force myself to write anyway. Often it’s just brain flow into the paper and not anything worth.
A writing activity that was suggested to me was concrete a list of ten situations, then ten characters, then ten fairy tales/folk tales/biblical tales then take one from each and combine plot with character with structure. I thought it was quite a good exercise 🙂

  2. I wrote a flash fiction because of number 1, a little while ago. It featured my grandpa.
I’ve also wrote a few flash fiction inspired by daily occurrences, like storm outside, hot weather, walking through the mall near closing time and encountering an orange in the middle of the hallway, …
Sometimes the inspiration strucks several times a day, but sometimes it stays away for a few days.
    Thanks for the tips!
