Stuck in NaNoWriMo

It’s easy to get stuck during NaNoWriMo. After writing 31,673 words in 19 days or perhaps even 5,000 words in a few days, what else could be written? The story has a plot, but there’s no clear path of where the story is going.

I’ve gotten to this point a lot during this NaNoWriMo. Before I even got to the third chapter (about 2,613 words in), I was wondering: “Well… What now?”

My favorite question to ask during this situation is “What if?”. What if my main character was secretly a witch? What if her parents hid her true identity from her? What would happen if she just couldn’t take it anymore and left the whole country?

I never go with the first “What if?” I think of since they’re usually draft questions. After a bit, I have a handful of questions to choose from. NaNoWriMo is not about being perfect, but rather just keep the story going. “What if”s are one way for me to keep my story going.

What about you? What do you do when you are stuck?
